Beginning February 1, 2025 the Michigan Earned Sick Time Act will go into effect. The main points of the Act are the following:
Employers are required to accrue a minimum of 1 hour of earned sick time for every 30 hours worked.
An employer with less than 10 employees is required to allow an employee to use 40 hours of paid earned sick time per year.
An employer with more than 10 employees is required to allow an employee to use 72 hours of paid earned sick time per year.
Earned sick time must be used in 1 hour increments, unless the employer has a different policy.
Earned sick time will carry over from year to year.
Earned but unpaid sick time is not required to be paid when separation from employment occurs.
Earned sick time may be used for the employee’s or employee’s family member’s physical or mental health issues and related care, as well as for the closure of the employee’s place of business or child’s place of school or care due to a public order.
